big brothers / big sisters
Mimi Gloria brought this one to my attention. Here is a combo article / review. Benefits and organizations helping people out rank high on my list. Music fluctuates between the #1 - #3. I will start off with article part.
The top navigation is standard format. Home page has a slide show with the song "Always Gonna be There With You" loading when you arrive. The information in the "About" section is brief and right to the point. The site is about teaching kids how to get along. Being a positive influence on others. Something even adults could remember at times. Myself included.
I used the 3g connection on my phone for listening. Right off, there is a warning on the "listen" page about being patient with the load times. First attempt: around 6 p,m., I received several "Could not connect to server errors." I would definitely suggest a high speed connection here. Second attempt: around 9 p.m., not a problem! Could have been my provider.
Onto the album...
First track, "Wonderful Friends": Music and overall song is definitely for kids. What i like? It is as sing a long. The chorus, adults can take a meaning from. Julian Lennon did track 2, "Celebrate You". Instead of a song, it is more like spoken word. Track 4? Again, some adults could relate to this one. Track 5, "Tin Cans and Twine: This one has me smiling! Honestly, depending on your age, it may take you back. It also combines the past and present of communication. I really have to mention "Hooked on Fun" here! This one really took me back to being a kid, when I used to go fishing. You will love this one!!!! Yeah, you will seriously love this one... "Close Up the Laptop": One for everyone!!!! I really need to take this advice at times. Yes, I am only half joking. :)
Does the entire album stick with the theme? Does it incorporate Big Brothers and Big Sisters? Yes to both. I did not realize this on the first few tracks. "Hooked on Fun" was the first one I did. Then I started looking at the track titles from that angle. "Wheelchair Basketball" / "Gutterball" / "Ticket Stub" are just a few examples. The overall theme of being positive and helping out others is easily shown from track 1 to the end.
From the technical side, there is one thing that makes this album very different. It is not only a variety of music genres. It is also a variety, period. Yes, the music is not limited to one or two genres. There is more to it than that. Short stories and spoken word are spread throughout. It is a very good mix of the three. Also included is a good balance of serious vs. funny. Even though the overall message may be serious, you will find yourself laughing at times. Basically, think of when you were a kid. Remember listening to the sing-a-long releases? When you were learning about things through the combination of music and words. That about sums up what I am trying to say.
Even though the album (LP / MP3 / CD / etc.) is geared for kids, adults may have fun listening to it. No matter how old you are, you may be reminded of what life really is about. Another emphasis the album has: never give up. You may not succeed on the first several attempts, eventually you will.
Yes, I did listen to it straight through and writing the review while doing this. Depending on the track, I did have memories of my childhood. Especially on the tracks: "Hooked on Fun" and "Gutterball". Fishing and bowling I used to really love!
If there is something missing in your life, maybe being a Big Brother / Big Sister may fill that void. Everyone has talents / things they are good at. You may inspire a child to take a different path and try something new.
Here is where you can check out the album (I grew up with vinyl / cassettes / Cd's. Yes, I remember 8-tracks). Find out what Absolutely Positively Getting Along is about:
