Yes, the city of Allentown does have an actual art museum. Located near Hamilton across from the Arts Park. I have been here twice in 3 years. This makes Hoopla / Art Squawk my 3rd. Focusing on local galleries and artists, I failed to see the importance of the Allentown Art museum until now.
The museum is open Wednesday - Sunday. Admission of $12 for adults Wednesday - Saturday with Sundays free. The main chance I have to stop by is on a Sunday. Hoopla / Art Squawk gave me the perfect chance. I also wanted to check out the new exhibit, American Wildlife Art.
Walking in, there is a desk where you are greeted and information available. If you have a beverage with you, easily leave it here while you check out the exhibits. There are 3 floors. The first and second have most of the exhibits. Oh, looks are deceiving from the outside.
The building may not look that large. When you start walking around, you will be surprised at how much floor space there is. Due to getting back to Allentown around 3, I had to rush a little this time. I still spent about 1/2 hour just walking into the various rooms and looking at all the art. Each room has a different genre or theme to it. One even has a small library.
You will find everything expected at a full blown museum here. Different exhibits include short term / rotating to resident. Two, main ones caught my attention. One for the theme the other because it was different.
The Wildlife exhibit was my main choice. Also the one I knew about. I have to point a few paintings I stopped at: snakes. One had a closeup. The snake was surrounded by what appeared to be buffalo (you only saw the feet). The snake was coiled with it's head approaching striking position. My take on it's expression? "So many choices!" It sounds funny, but this is how I saw it, no joke!!!!! The other was a Diamond Back Rattlesnake hiding under leaves and in the shadows. Title? "Diamond in the Rough".
The other exhibit was "Drawing on Character: The Art of Children's Graphic Novels". Reason it was different, I was not expecting to see this in an art museum. Don't ask me why, I just was not expecting it.
Before I close out this article I have to mention the kids section. Crayola has a room where kids can draw and create. Parents can be there and watch their future artists. You never know. You could be the proud parent of another artist in the Louvre or any other famous museum!
Even though I have overlooked the Allentown Art Museum in the past, I now realize it is an essential part of the city.
I know you might be interested. Check out the exhibits and what else the museum has going on:
