A Valley and Beyond

Lehigh Valley author: Danielle Notaro

This one is a little different for me. Danielle provided a copy of the print version. I actually enjoyed flipping through the pages and not using the laptop for a break. I have known Danielle for about 1 year. I have heard her writing at open mic nights. Her performance and emotion really convey the stories. This is another first for me: reviewing a local author. Look for an interview in the future. I am doing this review while reading the book.

The review...

Right off, the cover and title did catch my attention. The cover is an almost abstract painting of a sunset. The title? Seriously had me wondering what the book was about. The first few pages are the standard: Title / Copyright / Acknowledgements / Dedication / Intro / Table of Contents. Danielle does break it up with art and a quote right before the "About the Book" page. On the "About" page, Danielle provides us with definitions for the title. The book is divided into sections with no chapter titles, something different!

Not a breakdown, just some that really caught my attention

The first poem, "I Will Be Who I Am", gives you a great idea of where Danielle's writing comes from: personal experience. "Entering One French Fry" is something very different. Do not take this title at face value. Page 17, Danielle breaks up the flow with a poem in short story format. Catching your attention and snapping you back with a different style and format. "Happy Rides" on page 32 is where you get a great example of how this book is from Danielle's life and experiences. Starting in the concrete world of Bethlehem and Allentown; she takes us to the abstract emotions of the drive and destination. Danielle winds it down with a quick bio. I could not finish this one by typing. No way it could convey the entire points I want to make.
