Richmond, va
Thinking about taking a trip to Richmond, Virginia? Already live there? Want to know more about the local side? Gray Boom stopped by the Positive Vibe Café to give us a sample.
The Positive Vibe Cafe is a local Richmond institution. Although they are a little off the beaten path, it is worth the drive to find them.
Since 2004, they have helped over 400 people with disabilities, all on scholarships, train in basic restaurant skills, including basic food service, safe food handling and proper use and sterilization of utensils. The training program aims to prepare students for the work world and includes communication in a work place, interviewing, and job seeking. The program typically lasts four weeks and culminates with a graduation ceremony. Each graduate, in the end, is prepared for job seeking, interviewing and working in the food service industry.
The Cafe itself serves healthy, locally grown food, caters, and even has box lunches for adults and children alike. It has a small banquet space (up to 30 people) and an even smaller "Vault", which seats up to 8 people for a cozy get-together.
Going out of my comfort zone, I tried the shrimp and grits. It was actually very good! It came on a bed of fresh spinach, generously topped with a creamy tomato sauce, sprinkled with real bacon bits, and containing an ample amount of large sauteed shrimp. The softness of the grits contrasted well with the crispness of the bacon.
Be prepared to get a to go box. Although I ordered a small plate, it was still a generous helping of food, and they have some delectable and unique deserts to choose from, but you have to save some room first!! Try the salted chocolate caramel cake, or even red velvet ice cream!
The staff was friendly, the service was quick, and the food came out hot, but not so hot that I burned my mouth.
The parking was surprisingly ample.
One last positive note, they have sweet tea! This is a Virginia *must have*, and when you head out our way, if you have never tried it before, I highly recommend it!!
