I found out about a new indie, internet, radio station recently. The Indie Authority.com recently hit the airwaves of our virtual world. Tonight (10/06/13 around 8:30 p.m. I finally have a chance to check it out.
Right off, I want to point out the techncial side, on my end. I am using the 3g connection over my phone for this. After 1/2 hour of listening, I did not have any problems or pauses. The load time was fast and without a glitch.
This will be a two part article. The first will be a short review of the music and station. The second will be a review of the website.
Onto the music, they stick to the indie part as stated. The breaks or pauses in between songs? You go from one song into the next. The only break I heard was a quick mention of the dj. It was easy to tell the break was pre-recorded. No big deal, look at what all the commercial radio stations do since computers took over. Experience note here: I was a college radio DJ in the mid-nineties. Also a bored operaton on A.M. radio.
Back to the review. The show I listened to was rock. Some songs played really caught my attention. The variety? For about 10 minutes, the songs blended together. Before and after, there were good changes in tempo and speed. Including: I’ve Been Thinking by The Occupants. This has a reggae / rock switching in the song. Others, background music. As I stated, I had zero problems with the streaming on a 3G connection.
Overall recommendation on listening? Definitely give The Indie Authority as listen. Especially if you like rock / hard rock, you will find some groups / songs to check out in more detail.
Onto the Website review:
Homepage: Simple with easy navigation. Blog posts take front and center with listen live on the left. They remember old rules of website design: Keep things simple and easy. In case you may disagree, the rules still apply. To have a great website, you do not need the flash / colors / effects. People want to find
Navigation: 4 buttons under the title banner. “Click to Listen” at the same spot on every page. Again, keep things simple and easy to find.
One thing I like: They are honest. My take: in 2 sections they are in the process of developing. They state it! Another old lesson of website design: No “under construction” pages. Either have something relevant on the page or hide it. The submission pages do have short forms with explanations. Contact Us is standard.
Overall website rating: Surprised me. So many times people and organizations place emphasis on the latest technology and forget or ignore the basics. The Indie Authority is starting with the basics and, hopefully, will evolve the station and website and not forget them.
Website and Station overall: Surprised Me! Seriously give this one a shot for more than one time or a few minutes. It will be worth your time!!!!
