More than just the beatles
Even though the main focus was on Beatles music, there was more than just the music here. The event was at ArtsQuest / Musikfest Cafe in Bethlehem, Pa. I intentionally waited a few days to write this article. Was curious what I remembered about the most. It was not the music. After the interview with Geno, I was also curious if the event would back up his words.
One thing that Geno mentioned was the reason I remember the Beatles Showcase. The way the bands came together for one show. After speaking with different band members, this was a rare occasion they could see and support each other. With their busy schedules; it's very hard to do this on any given weekend. Until the show started, I did not realize this aspect. It was a very important point to see the bands getting together and having fun.
Another part of the interview that impressed me was the creativity. The bands did everything from exact covers to their own versions of Beatles songs. Everything from exact to blues to variations of rock were heard. Electric and acoustic even the harmonica had a place on the stage.
The crowd response was very high for every band. Moving from upper to floor level, almost everyone had their attention towards the stage when the music was going. This part was successful with high marks.

Yes, there were a few problems, especially on the technical side. The biggest ones occurred before the start. Security for a marathon tightened up the setup schedule real quick. Technical problems during the show were handled as best as possible. Per what I look for, the changeover times were about expected (7 - 12 minutes). There was one advantage to this time frame. Considering the different styles, it gave the audience a chance to refresh before the next band. The technical problems while a band was playing could have been covered better by some. I always look for crowd interaction here. Make a joke, have a conversation, anything but do not make it obvious. In other words, anything technical: make it a part of the show. Take the crowd's focus off the problem. Some bands did, others didn't. Moe, Lou and the rest gave it their best to make sure everything went off without as smooth as possible.
Overall, it was a great show. Despite the always unforeseen technical issues, the crowd loved it and so did I. There were behind the scenes interviews, and a lot of fun going on not seen on stage. Like the bands, it was great to see people I rarely have a chance to due to schedules. Credit and a special mention to Sheri Bayne, John Bedics, Steelwire Productions, the bartenders, Brian Limage, photograpers, waitresses and staff of ArtsQuest, and volunteers. Without staff, photographers, videographers, volunteers, any event could not happen; no matter how many people show up or the entertainment.
Overall, the Beatles Showcase proved Geno's words. One thing missing was a side stage for something to cover the changeover times. I did not have a chance to ask Geno about this. I really do not think it was missed by anyone. Honestly, I do think it would have been a little overkill. Not only did the changeover times give the audience a break; it also gave some behind the scenes a quick break. The photographers being a main category here.
Would I recommend it for next year? The main question coming from a non-Beatles fan.
Yes! The overall experience was easily worth it. Even though their music is enjoyed by newer generations; the different styles and takes will grab your attention. Also seeing several, great, local musicians in one show may take you off guard. With the time of year and uncertainty of weather, Musikfest Cafe is the best place for it. Hell, even if you just want to have some fun and spend a few bucks on that Sunday, this is one of your best bets. A Valley and Beyond will be covering it next year.
