Catasauqua
I have been to Pie's On a few times. Each visit, I tried something different. This review will include their Cheese steaks, Pierogies, Sicilian Pizza and Cheeseburgers. Yes, I will go to a pizza place and try a burger! :)
Starting off with my most recent visit, cheeseburgers. Here is the one item I was not impressed with. No, I really do expect any food place to do it all perfectly. Especially a pizzeria doing burgers. The larger size was more than I expected for $4.25. The California style included: Lettuce / Tomato / Onion / Ketchup / Mayonnaise / Mustard. Even though the burger was large in diameter, it was fairly thin. How did it taste? Average. There was nothing on the burger or how it tasted that really sparked it for me. I could not really tell any difference between this one and a burger from most places. Overall value? Very good! I really did not eat before stopping by. So, this was a breakfast / lunch combo at 2 in the afternoon. It filled me to the point where I was not hungry for about another 3 hours. Next up, one of their stronger points: pierogies.
Pierogies are one of my favorite foods. I have had everything from the church picnic style to grocery store. When it comes to getting them at a restaurant, I know good quality. Pie's On may not be church picnic quality (the best), but it's close enough. They are a little greasy but the soft potato filling and crunchy outer shell are done very well. You can tell they are home made vs. from a vendor. The 3 for $3.25 price makes this an excellent choice for a side order and great value. Cheese steaks are next up on the list and probably the best value.
When time permits, I never turn down a good cheese steak! The first time I had one from Pie's On, my father suggested it. After a good recommendation on taste, why not? He did warn me about the large ones: you better be hungry. Not believing him, I went for the large. I almost regretted it. This was dinner for me. I was hungry, just ate not that long before. When I was done, talk about being over full!!!! The cheese steak was over 12" long. It was also PACKED with meat. Cheese on the bottom and toppings including sauce, onions and peppers. I am not a fan of peppers, but the chef added enough for flavor without overkill. Here is where the great value comes in. The $6.99 + $0.75 (peppers) was easily worth it. I could have skipped breakfast and lunch. The Taste? the combination of meat, cheese and toppings made me think of a true Philly cheese steak. From the first bite, it was very delicious. I did not wait for it to cool down and almost burned the mouth a few times. Last but not least: Pizza.
When available, I usually go for Sicilian (square / thick crust / thick center). Pie's On scored average here. Don't get me wrong, the pizza was very good. Thick cheese evenly melted and the crust was crispy and not burned. It tasted like a sicilian slice from other places. The center was soft and not over or under cooked. Customer service is last on the list.
Every time I stop by, there is good customer service. The wait times vary depending on how busy they are. When I ordered the sicilian, It took fairly long to get the slice. When it was brought out; I was informed they burned the first one. No complaints on any visit here.
Overall suggestion: Pie's On, like any food place has it's high and low points. The overall value is above average to excellent on most items. The main low point was the burger. From what I have tried so far: Definitely try the chee
