This review is from 2013.
Local Band - Lehigh Valley, Pa area. When it comes to reviewing local music, I have one rule: I see and review the band before I review a cd / album by that band. I don't want my review of a performance to be biased. I saw and reviewed psych at Mezza Luna's pre-4th bash. They only did one set, but it still validates the rule.
My second rule about local bands: original bands take priority over cover bands. Psych did a few covers, but they also did some originals at the show. Second rule validated.
Third rule: Unless a band requests it, I do not use the cd cover. I prefer that you see what looks live.
I do not include any samples when I review a cd. I want you to click on the band links and find out for yourself if I am right or wrong.
Rules out of the way, onto the review of Psych 101. Catchy title right off! Yes, I am writing the review as I am listening to the cd.
Onto the review, I promise!
Right off, this cd wakes you up. The first song, No Coming Back, hits hard with power in both lyrics and music. Track 1 slides nicely into track 2, Slip Away. Slip away, backs it off just a little. Not a bad thing or downside. Again, the music and lyrics carry the power I expect from this band. Track 3, hits you hard with Drama Queen. Good start to the disc: hard, back it down slightly, bring it back up. No attention loss or zoning so far! Cinderella Inside is one song that everyone can take advice from. I love the lyrics on this one the most! Onto track 6, Tell me...
I want to mention this track for two reasons. First, its starts off as a ballad then turns into a serious rocker. Second, one line in it reminds me of a poison concert I saw years ago. Also a line of a Poison song. Let's see if you can figure it out.
The theme of track 8 is, remotely, similar to Cinderella Inside. Points in my review for having two, different, songs that everyone can take something from and apply it to life.
One other track I will mention: Southbound Train. Psych proves they can back it down to almost a ballad here and still make you want to stay on a dance floor. Overall review and closing comments next.
Overall, the cd kicks ass! It keeps your attention with a good mix of harder / backing off slightly / bringing it back up. This is what Psych does in their shows, they keep your attention. The disc started off hard and powerful. It ended on a different note: a great dance rock track. I did not zone out one time while listening to all 10 tracks. You will be moving to every song.
The only element missing from this disc, one ballad / slow song / power ballad. That element would have seriously set this disc off. Don't get me wrong, I love every track. I state this fact because I saw them slow it down in their show.
In case you are wondering: Favorite song on Psych 101: Cinderella Inside.
For anyone, especially if rock is one genre you listen to, the local band Psych should be on every one of your playlists. If you are in the area, check them out live, seriously.
