Fighting insurance companies for you
After an interview with an old friend, Sam Yoder who is a Public Adjuster, I was very curious about this little known profession. I was also curious about how much they do help people and fight the insurance companies. I have to stress, Public Adjusters do not participate in any form of insurance fraud or encourage it in any way. These people are licensed and bonded through the state. With the legal part out of the way, time to find out why you need one if you ever have to deal with the insurance companies.
When I first heard of public adjusters, I believed they worked for the insurance companies. After interviewing Sam and attending a presentation, I realized exactly how much they are on your side. The presentation did leave me with a lot of questions on both sides of this story.
Insurance companies are businesses with investors and stock holders to answer to. You may think as a policy holder, this group is the only one they are accountable to. Seriously, you make your payments on time. May or may not having rising rates and deductibles. Expect everything to be taken care of if / when something like a severe storm or anything else happens.
Yes, by law, insurance companies do take care of you to a point. Here is where public adjusters come in. Insurance companies may not always pay what you are entitled to or the full amount. A public adjuster serves several roles in the process. Including checking your policy (ies) before you need to have something fixed or replaced.
After a policy is purchased, beyond making payments, most people never think about it or rarely review their policy. Here is the first way a Public Adjuster comes into play. They can review your policy and inform you in several areas including: what is and is not covered and if you have enough insurance. The second part often relies on what the person can afford. Not everyone can do monthly payments for all the insurance they need. A Public Adjuster will also strip out the legal speak and explain things in plain English (your language).
When you do need the insurance company, here is where a Public Adjuster really comes into play!
Everything from a water leak to mold to major storm damage will be looked at by a Public Adjuster. Public Adjusters are trained to look at all the damage from a problem, not just what is obvious.
For example: if you have a water leak that qualifies for insurance reimbursement. The leak happens in the bathroom on the second floor. The water follows a course and leaks through the first floor ceiling. It also flows through a wall. Floor damage and possible mold COULD also qualify for repair / replacement under your insurance policy. Other people (insurance adjusters / contractors / etc.) may miss this additional damage.
I just gave you a basic example of how a Public Adjuster can help. There are a lot more examples that can be used. Nature is a perfect one. No matter where you live, chances are you will face severe / extreme weather (hurricanes, snow / ice, wild fires, etc.). Check the statistics on dealing directly with the insurance companies vs. having a Public Adjuster involved.
Seriously, do the research and math. Find out for yourself if contacting a Public Adjuster is worth your time.
One of the certainties of life? Very little can be predicted. A Public Adjuster can make things a little easier and have you breathe easier.
