Great story even if you are not into Star Wars
Important Note: This review covers the Windows 10 and Android apps. Game play is the same, just different screen sizes.
One of my all time favorite games is the Command & Conquer series. I like strategy games. Especially the type where you control the pace of the game. Played some where it just jumps you from one mission to the next. What can I say, I like to burn stress / kick ass / have fun! Plus, loved the first Star Wars movies (Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi).
One thing I look for in most games, especially strategy, is a great story line. If the story is great, I could even deal with lower game play in certain areas. Star Wars Commander has it all!
When you start the game, there is a 1 mission tutorial. The game is pretty easy to figure out without it. The tutorial is great for anyone who has never played this type of game. After the tutorial, things start getting fun!
Now, you have to choose a side. Being a veteran of strategy games, usually, the basics are the same for both sides. Units change and you get both sides of the story. Figured it would be the same with Star Wars Commander. I have to mention, it was first installed on my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime phone (chose the Empire. After I upgraded to Windows 10, could not resist and chose the Rebels.)
Like almost all Strategy games, you have missions. Build your base. Create and maintain an army. Attack / build / defend depending on the mission. Unlike some games in this genre, you can control the speed at which things happen. The game does not try to force you through it. One aspect I really like? You have control over what you build and when. Recently played another game that pretty controlled everything without giving you too many choices. At that point, why play it?
Unlike a lot of people, I am not a fan of mulit-player games. Prefer solo against the computer. When I drop into a game, it is usually for stress relief or to escape life. Star Wars Commander is perfect for this preference. The main focus of the game is against the computer. There is one mission, in the beginning, where you have to attack another player. The multi-player aspect is there, just not a major part / focus.
The story is revealed with each mission. New characters are introduced over time. There are some characters, including Darth Vader / Princess Leia who do appear in both the story and units you can, eventually, create. Again, neither the game or story try to rush or force you to finish.
Quick note here: Each mission has a 3 star level. So far, getting all 3 stars in each mission, only affects acquiring extra gems. The gems do help, but, just focus on completely each mission first. Then go for the perfect level when you figure out the pattern. Yes, like most games, there are patterns to each mission.
Last thoughts on story line and progression. After the first few missions, I wanted to beat each one to find out what is going to happen next. The Command & Conquer series is the ONLY other game(s) that had this affect on me. Time for a short breakdown and overall recommendation.
Story line: Triple Excellent! Not only is it well integrated into game play; it shows steady progression with each mission. If you love a great book, you will enjoy Star Wars Commander.
Game play: Triple Excellent! From the tutorial to more advanced missions. There is no rush to complete each one. Missions are focused and easy to play and figure out. Overall controls are also easy to figure out. Windows 10 uses the mouse. Android version is easy on the touchscreen.
I highly recommend Star Wars Commander for anyone who loves Strategy games. Also, highly recommended for people who play games like they read books, for the story. Even if you are not a fan of Star Wars, it is still fun to play and experience!
