I came back into the Lehigh Valley in September 2010. After over 8 years in North Carolina, I was ready for a mom and pop diner. Where I was in North Carolina, only Waffle House. One of my first stops was the closest diner available.
The first day back, I was also in the mood for a good Rainbow Trout meal. Top Diner was the first diner I noticed. The Trout with fries was excellent and just what a doctor would have advised.
Since then, I stopped by a few times, once in the morning but usually late at night. I usually go for a coffee or breakfast style. I can rarely turn down eggs / homefries / toast, especially late at night.
Before I go into a quick review, I want to give you a layout of the diner. The first thing when you walk in is a small lobby. Video game / atm / phone are pretty much what you see. Going through the main door, you see a host / hostess area. 2 rows, one with tables and the next with small tables and the main counter / seating. Head to the left and you are starting to go back to the cocktail lounge area. A few larger tables are on the way. When the lounge is open, there is a bar with tables and a small area for a band.
A few months ago, Top Diner changed owners. In the cocktail lounge, there is live music and karaoke. They have a banquet room available for your events.
Onto the quick review. This is based on recent visits. Although I would still highly suggest the Trout when it is on the menu.
Each time I went in, the service was very polite and friendly. I know, what you would expect. I have been to places where this point received a very low rating. I usually sit at the counter except when I want to get some work done. Each time, I had no problem getting a seat or at least having a beverage order taken within a few minutes.
The food, usually breakfast is good. Eggs are not runny or overdone. Homefries are a combination of crispy and tender. I have not experienced any burned or raw potatoes. Toast has never been burned or regular bread. Coffee is not over made. Basically, nothing spectacular but a very good meal.
Overall, I would suggest Top Diner no matter what your budget. Breakfast style I had was around $5.00. I felt like it was a good value. Top Diner is great if you want a good meal or a quick stop on a lower budget. The service has always been good. From the moment I entered to when I left. I am including the one time I was back in the cocktail lounge. I was interviewing Geno Barron and the bartender was friendly with a decent price for a beer.
The low point is Top Diner is not a 24 hour diner. If you are planning on stopping by when the bars close, the diner is also closed. Breakfast / lunch / dinner or a stop before you go out would be a great idea.
