I review both, full books and samples. I have a few full e-books by Charity Parkerson. For this review, I wanted to do a sample. Curious if a few pages could get me interested in wanting to buy the book and reading more of her titles.
As usual, the review is being done as I am reading it.
The books starts off with an interesting quote. What is has to do with everything? I am sure I will find out soon enough. Setting up a good scene in the tropics, Ms. Parkerson does not waste our time with a boring backstory. Instead, she jumps right into present day and the story. So far, I am not left wondering about the backstory or even care. Also, Ms. Parkerson does not waste our time or imagination with going overboard on scene details. Again, do not really care at this point.
I have to point out something during the conversation between the first 2 characters: Adriana and Jacques. I just, literally, stopped reading to laugh for a minute. The way the conversation takes place is like between any 2 people. The phrases and tone are not forced but flow naturally.
Talk about a quick change of pace! Right after a normal conversation, Ms. Parkerson leads us into a plot and something a complete 180 of what I expected.
Skipping ahead in the story, again, Ms. Parkerson keeps us somewhat off guard and does not fill in what may be boring details.

Overall review
I want more!
Ms. Parkerson does a great job in a few areas. This also backfired a little.
Taking the story right into modern day while skipping all the background does work. Adding in normal conversation without the formalities makes you easily understand it. Jumping around does give a lot of room for backstory and filling in details later. She has the space to provide these without getting drawn out and boring. So far, it seems Ms. Parkerson is letting the characters write the story without forcing it.
The backfired part? I found myself slightly confused at one point. Ms. Parkerson basically announces part of the story vs. letting it develop.
Overall, this sample easily wants me to read and find out more. It is well written with the high points outweighing the low ones by a long shot!
