It was also head coach Dave Hakstol's first game as the skipper of the Phantom's parent team. He was thrilled with the team's efforts and was happy with the atmosphere of the PPL Center.
Michael Raffl started the scoring for the Flyers at about 6 minutes into the game on power play goal, assisted by Jake Voracek and Michael Delzotto. The Islanders then knotted the game up just 2 minutes later on an unassisted goal by James Wright. These were the only goals scored in the first period.
The Flyers took the lead shortly into the second period by virtue of a Travis Konecny goal at the 3:46 mark. He was assisted by Cole Bardreau and Jay Rosehill. New York's Alan Quine took advantage of the power play to tie the game 2-2 just two minutes later. Just three minutes later, the Flyers took advantage of their own power play and again went ahead 3-2, courtesy of Vincent LeCavalier. RJ Umberger and Evgeny Medvedev were scored with the assists. Both teams were scoreless for the remaining 12 minutes of the second period.
New York started the off quickly in the third period by scoring at the 2:18 mark. Justin Vaine was assisted by Anthony Beauvillier and Ben Holmstrom. Not enjoying the tie, the home team scored roughly a minute later on a Delzotto score, assisted by Giroux and Voracek. This put the Flyers on top to stay, 4-3. There was a lot of action but little scoring during the next 16 minutes. In a last minute attempt to knot it up, the Islanders pulled their goalie, Christopher Gibson, to make use of an extra skater. Their efforts failed as Pierre-Edouard Bellemare charged up the left side of the ice and took a shot through the legs of the last defender and hit the back of the empty net. Manning and VandeVelde were scored with the assists. This was the last scoring of the game.
It was a very exciting pre-season game enjoyed by the 7,981 fans in attendance!! There is no doubt the Phantom Phaithful are more excited than ever to the Lehigh Valley team on ice October 3rd.
See you then....
